The Grand Canyon of Yellowstone

I’ve been wanting to go to Canyon ever since I  got here, but I haven’t really had the chance.  I had heard that it is beautiful and has a sort of fatal attraction that draws people to the edge to get a better look.  I wanted to see for myself.  Having just gone to The Grand Canyon and Bryce Canyon in April,  my love for canyons is in heat.

Meaghan, Josh, Cody and I all hopped in the car for an afternoon adventure to Canyon Village.  Canyon is only about 20 miles from Lake, making it the closest location to us.  I can’t believe I have been here a month and haven’t gone to Canyon yet!

Well, the views were amazing.  My camera died after taking my first picture, but you get the idea.  This canyon is massive.  There are two waterfalls, the upper falls and the lower falls.  I stared at the waterfalls and canyons in awe.  It was also rather solemn, as well, looking out at Inspiration Point, where an 18 year old employee fell to her death earlier this season on her very first day at the park.  She had hopped the fence, and hiked on the edge over to the right of Inspiration Point with a friend.  She was sitting down, enjoying the view, when the ground broke beneath her, and she fell over 400 feet into the canyon.  Her friend was just behind her, and barely avoided falling.  It gave me shivers looking down into the canyon and imagining falling.  How dreadful.

We spent the day walking around with the hoards of tourists, looking at the falls and the canyon walls.  The highlight of my day was looking at an Osprey nest, on a little rock outcropping over the canyon.  We couldn’t see anything in the nest, but Josh said earlier in the season there were eggs inside.  We saw an Osprey soaring above.  Magical.
