Once upon a time, on the streets of Bangkok…
…four silly Couchsurfers went out in search of food.
The travelers, each from a distant land far far away, all agreed on one thing: they were hungry. They were really quite hungry, and decided to venture downtown to a night market. It was closed. So they searched and searched, and finally found some squid-on-a-stick, which was tasty, but most defiantly did not fill their tummies.
The Couchsurfers are Jiajia, from China, Peter, from Taiwan, Anoush, you know, and Lenly, the Couchsurfing host who brought them all together. On their mission to find food, they found something exciting and new. Bugs–edibles that are only edible if you close your eyes.
Cockroaches, grasshoppers, scorpions, and more. These Couchsurfers were feeling brave…

OK, so I had seen this before, on Khao San Road, where all the tourists are, but they are wildly overpriced there (especially considering that you’re paying for something that you normally crush with your human super-strength while screaming and dancing like the ground is on fire). But here, these bugs were only a couple of cents a pop. I had to go for it. Not only was I really hungry, but the theme of the night was a general feeling of friskiness and adventure. Here’s how it went down:
Step 1: Put grasshopper in mouth.
Step 2: Bite it’s head off.
Step 3: Pulverize it with your teeth, to avoid feeling like you’re swallowing a giant grasshopper.
Yeah. It was as gross as it sounds. Grasshopper: tastes like fried chicken. But with legs and an exoskeleton. Probably carries parasites, too. We’ll see.
We washed it down with a little more street food…
…and promised each other we’d find McDonalds on the way home to really wash it all down with a sundae.
So, we got our American icecream fix just before the 24-hour McDonalds closed for the night (yeah, I didn’t understand that either).

No one vomitted, their appetites were satiated, and all was good.
The four brave Couchsurfers lived happily ever after.
